Background: President Macron had called a surprise snap election on 9th June, a rare event in French politics, after the June European Parliament elections, in which French voters’ support for Macron’s coalition (15%) was half that secured by the far right (31%). This has unnerved markets and France’s partners given the extent of support for both the far right and the far left.
